New Delhi, 15 October 2026: The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has asked 764 senior citizen homes across India to run cleanliness and upkeep drives as part of the government’s Special Campaign 6.0.
The homes are supported under the Integrated Programme for Senior Citizens (IPSrC), the ministry’s main scheme for old-age homes, day care centres and mobile care units. The campaign is being coordinated by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) under the theme “Swachhata se Samman, Har Varg ka Utthan”.
What the homes have been asked to do
- Clean living rooms, corridors, dining areas, kitchens and recreation spaces
- Declutter, separate waste and dispose of it properly
- Plant and look after gardens and green spaces
- Keep pathways clear so residents can move around safely
The ministry has encouraged residents to take part in activities that suit their health and mobility, alongside staff and the organisations that run the homes. Homes have also been asked to keep these routines going after the campaign ends, through regular cleaning schedules, waste management and garden upkeep.
Why it matters for older adults
Clear, uncluttered corridors and pathways are one of the simplest ways to prevent falls, a leading cause of injury in people over 60. Clean kitchens and dining areas reduce infections, and green spaces give residents a reason to step outside and stay active.
Tips you can use at home
- Clear the walking path from bed to bathroom. Remove loose mats, wires and stools.
- Add light: a night light in the bedroom and bathroom helps prevent night-time falls.
- Declutter one shelf a day so that daily-use items are at waist to shoulder height, with no climbing needed.
- Grow a few plants on a balcony or windowsill. Light gardening is gentle exercise and good for mood.
