Diagnosed with diabetes at 60, Navy veteran Mahipal Singh has since run 150 marathons

How a diagnosis became a turning point, and simple rules for exercising with diabetes.

In 2021, at the age of 60, retired Navy veteran Mahipal Singh was told he had Type 2 diabetes. He decided to run.

The Ghaziabad resident took up running to manage his blood sugar. What began as a health routine became a second career in sport. According to The Better India, he has now completed more than 150 marathons and collected around 200 medals and 50 trophies.

Triple gold in Dubai

In 2023, Mahipal won gold in three races in the 60-plus category in Dubai: the 1,500 m, 5,000 m and 10,000 m. He is now 65.

Why this matters

Diabetes is one of the most common conditions among older Indians. Regular physical activity is one of the most effective ways to manage it, alongside diet and medicine. Mahipal’s story shows that a diagnosis in your sixties can be a turning point, not an ending.

Exercise with diabetes: simple rules

  • Talk to your doctor first, especially if you take insulin or tablets that can cause low sugar.
  • Start with brisk walking, 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Build up slowly.
  • Carry something sweet, like glucose tablets, in case your sugar drops.
  • Check your feet after every walk or run, and wear good shoes and cotton socks.
  • Keep taking your medicine. Exercise helps, but does not replace treatment.
