Anil Kapoor is 69. Salman Khan turned 60. Both are still playing leading roles, and both are known for their strict fitness routines.
Film stars have personal trainers, chefs and hours to spare, so their routines are not a template for everyone. But some of their habits are simple enough for any of us to borrow. Here is what has been reported about how Bollywood’s 60-plus stars stay fit.
Anil Kapoor, 69
- Works out for about two hours a day, including about 45 minutes of cardio such as running and cycling
- Adds weight training and yoga
- Follows a high-protein diet and drinks plenty of water
Salman Khan, 60
- Exercises six days a week, mixing strength training, cardio, cycling and swimming
- Prefers simple, home-cooked food
And in their late fifties
- Akshay Kumar (58) reportedly wakes at 5 am for yoga, meditation and Surya Namaskar, and eats dinner before 6:30 pm.
- Ajay Devgn (57) trains daily and says seven hours of sleep is non-negotiable.
What you can borrow, at any budget
- Move every day. You do not need two hours. 30 minutes of brisk walking, five days a week, is a strong start.
- Add strength twice a week. Muscle loss speeds up after 60. Light weights, resistance bands or chair squats help keep you steady on your feet.
- Do yoga or stretching for balance and flexibility, which lowers the risk of falls.
- Eat dinner early and simply. Home-cooked food with enough protein: dal, paneer, curd, eggs or sprouts.
- Protect your sleep. Aim for seven hours.
Check with your doctor before starting a new exercise plan, especially if you have heart problems, diabetes, high blood pressure or joint pain.
